While we’re just as guilty as anyone of hyping horror movies, The Woods trailer seems truly terrifying for a number of reasons. Not only does The Woods feature an all-star horror writer and director combo, but, somehow, a few aficionados have already seen the movie — and the reviews are great.
Sam Zimmerman, of Fangoria, Tweeted after his sneak peek that it’s, “spooky af.” If that two-word review doesn’t do it, then Time Out New York‘s Joshua Rothkopf’s hot take will. He said it had “moments that made me want to yank out my hair. Truly unnerving.” Now we’re talking.
With Adam Wingard, director of the survival horror masterpiece You’re Next, behind the lens, it’s safe to say this film is in good hands. Wingard can basically do no wrong if you ask us after watching You’re Next multiple times. Then there’s Simon Barrett writing the script, which is a brilliant pairing after seeing his work on parts of V/H/S 1, 2 and You’re Next.
So we’ve got great early reviews and a killer production crew… But what the hell is the movie about? According to IMDb the found-footage film “follows a group of college students on a camping trip who discover they’re not alone.” While that’s your typical “lost in creepy woods” plot, Wingard said the terrors in this film qualify as “shit your pants” scary. And he didn’t say that about YN, which definitely had me jumping out of my seat.
So why are we buying into the hype? Because unlike
most every horror trailer, The Woods trailer doesn’t give away too much. In fact, it doesn’t give us much to go by. It’s like a breathe of fresh air almost. What we do see in the teaser looks like true, cerebral terror as opposed to jump scares and bad CGI.
We’ve got some time until the film hits theaters on September 16. Until then, dive into The Woods trailer above, and let us know if you’ll be catching this one in the theater. Follow @TheWoods on Twitter while you’re at it.
