You have probably noticed that we have been a little hip-hop heavy over here at Brotherhood this past week, as happens from time to time, but what can we say? It’s not often that Freddie Gibbs drops a surprise EP and Kendrick Lamar releases some cryptic info about his upcoming album all in the span of a couple days. Kendrick has had fans waiting for a follow up to his Grammy nominated album good kid, m.A.A.d city since it dropped in late 2012 and last Friday he tweeted an iTunes preorder link that disclosed the upcoming project is set to release on March 23rd. Previously all he had revealed about the album was that he finished it last Fall and the only copy was in the hands of his 10 year old little brother.
Kendrick had told DJ Whoo Kid in an interview on his radio show, “No, real talk. He has the album and he tell me what he like. That’s my A&R right there. Sophisticated ear.” But last night K-Dot took to instagram to reveal a little bit more info including that the album is going to be called To Pimp A Butterfly. The 16-track LP is set to feature the single “The Blacker the Berry”, but beyond that the track list has been pretty much kept under wraps. It is rumored that he has at least three unreleased tracks recorded with George Clinton of Parliament Funkadelic. It will be interesting to see what makes the final cut.
Be sure to check out the album artwork below and let us know in the comments what you think about Kendrick’s new direction for this project. Aside from what Yeezy has in the works this year there is a good chance that To Pimp A Butterfly will be one of the most anticipated hip-hop albums of the year so you can expect to hear more about it from us in the near future.
